Everyone faces difficulties throughout their lives, some of them small, and some of them very important. In certain cases, we are able to solve these difficulties without any help, coming up with strategies that perform well and contribute to our sense of self-confidence and self-esteem in overcoming difficult or demanding issues.
However, at times, the difficulties, problems or circumstances we encounter can be daunting. They can appear to be beyond the reach and breadth of our problem-solving skills or fields of expertise. It might even appear difficult to locate anyone inside our existing group of acquaintances, family, or employers whom it would be acceptable to address the matter with.
Group and Individual Options
The answer to this dilemma may not be as difficult as it first appears. Counselling can offer a short-term option to work through challenges and problems that may crop up in anyone’s life. These issues can be discussed in a small group setting, or individually, as a combination of the two options.
Group sessions that are carefully structured by the counsellor are available as a way to talk through challenges with others who are facing similar issues, obstacles, or difficulties. Group therapy for depression can be especially effective when individuals benefit from shared experiences and mutual support.
Counselling can be completed on an individual basis as well. With this option, as well as with group sessions, the counsellor is not there as a source of definitive answers to the client’s problem. Instead, the counsellor, and group members if applicable, are there to introduce new ideas and provide differences in perspective. By examining these ideas and perspectives, the individual is then able to look at a range of ways to solve the problem or create a better option for resolution.
What issues can counselling help with?
There are a multitude of issues that a counsellor can help you with, from depression counselling to phobias, anxiety to stress, addiction to eating disorders.
Whilst some of the same techniques and methods may be used in counselling and psychotherapy, counselling tends to address more specific and immediate issues than psychotherapy does. It is more directly focused on current challenges or concerns that the client may have as opposed to long-term patterns of behaviour.
There are several different challenges or areas of concern that are effectively addressed through counselling as opposed to other types of therapeutic interventions. In several cases, issues with interpersonal conflict in relationships are ideal candidates for counselling.
Highly professional and skilled in guiding and working with clients, Philippe Jacquet has years of experience in counselling clients. This experience and professionalism allow him to structure both group and individual sessions to maximise the potential for personal growth and change.
In some situations and with some clients, counselling may be an effective way to address immediate issues, while encouraging more reflective work to continue in the future. In this situation, the counsellor can work with the client to determine if psychotherapy is appropriate to get to the root issues that may be in the client’s best interest.

Anxiety counselling
Often, people who find that they are consumed by worry can benefit from anxiety counselling, where they talk to a trained therapist about what is causing the anxiety and perhaps uncover a hidden reason for their constant worry. Counselling for anxiety helps clients understand patterns of fear and emotional response, particularly for those seeking anxiety London support.
The idea is not to get the patient to a place where they will never worry again because that is impractical and potentially harmful. Instead, the patient will learn ways to manage their anxiety to improve their day-to-day life. This form of stress therapy and anxiety-focused counselling supports emotional regulation and resilience.
Depression counselling
Those seeking help for depression will learn new coping mechanisms, as well as having the chance to be honest about what is troubling them to someone who won’t judge them and perhaps get to the root cause of their problem. Depression counselling allows clients to explore emotional challenges safely while building healthier responses to difficult situations.
Stress counselling
There are any number of things that can cause someone to seek out stress counselling, from marital problems to pressure at work. With this type of therapy, the patient will learn how to manage their stress in the long term, especially by making time for themselves.
This may include counselling for stress, stress management and counselling, or structured approaches to counselling stress, all aimed at reducing overwhelm and improving emotional balance in everyday life.
Eating Disorders
Those suffering from eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, compulsive overeating, and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS), may well be experiencing other mental health issues, like those listed above, and counselling can help address the underlying issues that are causing the eating disorder.
Addiction
Those suffering from addictions including, but not limited to, alcohol, smoking, prescription medication, and illegal drugs, can benefit from therapy to address the (perhaps) hidden issues causing the addiction.
Much like with eating disorders, addiction is often the result of underlying mental health conditions and may even be an attempt to self-medicate.
This is one of the greatest problems that comes with the stigma around mental health issues. It exacerbates the existing problem, say depression, and can also cause further issues, like alcoholism or drug misuse. With treatment for addiction, counselors will look at the whole picture in order to treat the patient effectively. Think about it like gardening: if you want to remove a plant, there’s no point focusing on the part you can see because the roots will cause the plant to grow back.
